What is Reverse Osmosis? How does it work? Why do we use RO?

Reverse osmosis“RO”was developed as a water treatment method more than 40 years ago and began to be commercially produced for home water purification as early as the 1970s. It is the most convenient and effective method of water filtration. It filters water by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane, which is rated at 0.0001 micron (about five thousandth of E. Coli.). In the process, all harmful substances such as pesticides, heavy metals, detergents, viruses and bacteria, pollutants and radiation particles are removed to drain, only water molecules and mineral ions can pass through the membrane. The purity of water filtered by RO is same as distilled water but less costly than distilled water. Therefore, it is used for making bottled water and is the only technology capable of desalinating sea water into drinking water.

Reverse Osmosis is the most advanced and effective water treatment method to remove all harmfull substances in water. It is currently used by Public Utilities Board of Singapore as the core filtration to produce high grade water - NEWater at the Bedok NEWater Factory. It has been a very common filtration system used for drinking water and is very popular in the USA, Taiwan and Japan.
